Assessment Flow
Run a baseline, then the VRSS ramp
The baseline uses a fixed 100 word passage. After a short countdown, the VRSS run presents one word at a time in the same position, starts at 100 WPM, and ramps automatically until the reader chooses to stop.
100 word baseline
Read the passage naturally and stop the timer the moment you finish. A 3 second countdown runs before timing begins.
Auto ramping VRSS
Watch the fixed display, let the speed climb, and stop when it becomes too difficult to absorb comfortably.
You can also press Space.
Baseline Timer
Read the full passage at your normal pace
Start when ready, read naturally, then stop immediately after the last word. A 3 second countdown appears before the timer starts, and only the final results screen compares the two methods.

Arthur stared at the blinking red light on his smart coffee machine. It required a software update before it would brew his desperately needed morning caffeine. He sighed, tapping the glowing touchscreen. Suddenly, the machine beeped loudly and demanded he solve a puzzle to prove he was actually a human being. "Are you kidding me?" Arthur muttered, squinting at blurry pictures of traffic lights. He clicked three crosswalks and a bicycle. Finally, the machine whirred to life, dispensing a perfect, aromatic cup. He took a sip, smiled, and decided proving his humanity was a small price for great morning coffee.
The timer starts from zero and stays private until the end.
